Red Wolves Win 35th-Straight Against ULM Friday Night
MONROE, La. (10/25/19) – A career night by junior Madison Brown propelled the Arkansas State volleyball team to its 35th straight win in the series against Louisiana-Monroe Friday night, notching 16 kills in a tight 3-2 (25-27, 25-14, 25-23, 23-25, 15-8) A-State victory.
The Red Wolves (13-7, 4-4 Sun Belt Conference) utilized a balanced attack for the win, with four players combining for 57 kills in the triumph over the Warhawks (10-14, 1-8).
In addition to Brown’s career-high 16 kills on 38 attacks, Peyton Uhlenhake was one of four Red Wolves with a double-double, totaling 15 kills with 13 digs and a pair of blocks. Macey Putt added 14 kills and 13 digs to go along with three blocks, while Timber Terrell factored in 12 kills and two blocks. A-State’s setters shined, led by Malgorzata Andersohn’s double-double effort of 33 assists (a career high) and 14 digs. Julianna Cramer added 25 assists and 10 digs for her sixth double-double of the year.
Andersohn and Uhlenhake lead the team with eight double-doubles apiece this season. Josie Stanford also tallied a career high nine kills while Brianna Hollingshed added a career-high four blocks in reserve action.
As a squad, A-State tallied 10.0 total blocks. Defensively, Paulina Sobolewska led the way with a team-high and career-best 21 digs.
Set 1 – ULM, 27-25
In the opening set, neither team led by more than two for a majority of the set. A kill by Terrell gave A-State an 18-16 lead, but the Warhawks battled back to knot it up at 18-all before another Terrell kill made it 19-18.
The Warhawks would hold set point at 24-23 into an A-State timeout, but the Red Wolves would save another set point to make it 25-all. ULM went on to take the next two points to take an early 1-0 lead in the match.
Brown led the way with six of her 16 kills to go along with four by Terrell. Hannah Cox (6 digs) and Uhlenhake (4) combined for 10 digs in the set on the defensive end. Andersohn led the offense with nine assists to accompany six assists by Cramer.
Set 2 – A-State 25-14
The second set started off similarly to the one before it, until kills by Brown and Kendahl Davenport opened up a 5-3 A-State lead that would hold through the remainder of the frame.
In the set, the Red Wolves would stretch their lead out to as much as 10 before taking a 25-14 decision in the set to even up the match at 1-all. Uhlenhake then fired an ace to end the set.
Stanford and Brown each tallied four kills apiece to lead the Red Wolves offensively, with the help of nine assists by Andersohn.
Set 3 – A-State 25-23
The Warhawks got out to an early 9-4 lead and would ultimately win the race to 20, leading 20-14. A-State would not back down, though, going on a 6-0 run to knot up the set at 20-all.
The Red Wolves would hold off ULM, winning five of the last seven points behind three kills from Uhlenhake to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
In addition to Uhlenhake’s five kills in the stanza, Putt led the way with seven of her 14 kills. Andersohn dished out eight assists to go along with six from Cramer.
Set 4 – ULM 25-23
The Red Wolves claimed early momentum in the fourth set with a 10-4 lead, but ULM remained in striking distance, keeping the deficit to no more than six throughout.
ULM inched closer and ultimately knotted things up at 21-all and claimed the last two points after a 23-all deadlock to force a decisive fifth set.
Brown, Putt and Uhlenhake tallied four kills apiece to combine for 12 of A-State’s 14 kills in the set while Sobolewska collected 11 digs.
Set 5 – A-State 15-8
After the first eight points were back and forth, the Red Wolves stormed with a 3-0 run to take a 7-5 lead that the Warhawks could not overcome.
ULM would claim only three more points in the match, as A-State went on a pair of 4-0 runs to close out the set and match. Two kills by Putt and a pair of attack errors by the Warhawks ended things with A-State taking a 15-8 fifth set.
Putt, Stanford and Uhlenhake each posted a pair of kills while Cramer led the offense with four assists.
Mikaela Worley led ULM with 13 kills and 12 assists, while Kate Blasingame notched 12 kills and 14 digs. Alix Christie tallied 10 total blocks and Madeline Hogan collected a match-high 24 digs.
A-State concludes its three-match road stint Saturday night in Lafayette against Louisiana (6:30 p.m.) before returning home for three straight matches, starting with a Friday-night showdown against Georgia Southern (6:30 p.m., Nov. 1).
